After 20 years of working in the corporate dominion, Anubha took a detour from the service industry to serve humanity.
In 2012, she set up an NGO called Angel Xpress Foundation (AXF). This platform connects educated adults who want to give back to school going children from slums through tutoring, mentoring programs that focus on academic improvement & like skills development at learning centres operated from public spaces like parks.
Anubha and her team are reaching out to 1000 + children with the help of 250 volunteers and a few appointed teachers out of 9 locations across Mumbai. Another 2500 children are provided daily lessons in English through appointed teachers at BMC schools.
In a recent discussion with her, we asked her questions about women’s role in the social sector, and this is what she had to say:
  • What inspired you to make the decision of getting into the social sector?

I saw a gap and believed I had the ability to do something about it and make a positive difference to lives. That I could afford to give up an income to do something meaningful, made it easier to make that choice.

  • How difficult is it for you to manage your professional and personal life since you work in the social sector?

I am pretty much my own woman and can choose to live my life as I want; In both my personal life as well as at work I have always had a very clear idea of what I wanted out of life. I have strong convictions and have also, fortunately, enjoyed a tremendous amount of support from friends and family, At Angel Xpress, I have also received immense support from strangers who joined me on my journey and became supporters, colleagues and friends along the way.

  • Would you recommend other women to also work in the social sector? If yes, then a piece of advice that you would like to share?

I would strongly recommend the social sector for anyone and everyone who can afford the smallest contribution, even if it consists of giving an hour or two from your week. If we want to see the world a better place, it is up to us to do more than being armchair critics to make a contribution. I like to tell mothers who are working so hard to bring up their kids right if you want a vote for the kind of world your child will live in spare some time. For every child who is taught right from wrong, there are 10 or more who aren’t, you can bring that awareness into the life of those children with the education and sensibilities that providence has granted you and help create responsible citizens of the world.

  • What is your definition of #PowerInYou?

We are limitless beings, but we can only realise what we allow ourselves to be. You will realise the #PowerInYou when you get out of your own way of growth, remove the obstacles in your own mind that tell you that you aren’t enough. You were created in the image of God and he did not give you a desire without the power to fulfil it.

We have much to do, much to be and much to achieve. Are you ready to bring out the #PowerInYou on this IWD 2017 and beyond?
