Some moments in life come quietly, yet they leave behind an echo that stays with us long after. During a baseline survey in a small village of Tehri Garhwal, under a project by Mount Valley Development Association, I experienced one such moment.
Field visits are usually busy, structured, and full of tasks. There are questionnaires to go through, conversations to facilitate, data to capture, and observations to note down. I had prepared myself for the same that day with the aim of immersing into the lives of people, listening to their challenges, and trying to understand the nuances of their everyday struggles.
But life always has its own way of reminding us that the heart of development work lies beyond forms and numbers.
Amidst the households I visited and met a little girl. She looked at me with curious eyes, hesitant yet eager. As I bent down to greet her, she slipped her tiny hand into mine. Her fingers, so small and fragile, were covered in jingling green bangles. The touch was simple, but the feeling it carried was profound. She didn’t say a word, yet in that instant, I felt an unspoken conversation of innocence, trust, and connection.

I stood there holding her hand and suddenly I was reminded of why I am here, why I chose this path of working in the field. We often speak of policies, surveys, and interventions as the road to change, and while they are essential, what truly sustains this journey are these human bonds. This little girl’s gesture was a reminder that behind every data point lies a story, a dream, a life that deserves to be nurtured. The green bangles on her wrist stayed in my mind. They symbolized resilience, hope, and the beauty of childhood that deserves to be celebrated. When she looked at me with those bright eyes, it felt like she was silently asking, “Will you remember me? Will you remember that my dreams matter too?”

And I knew I would.
Development work, I realized once again, is about pausing, listening, and truly seeing the people behind the statistics. It is about creating spaces where every child feels safe enough to hold your hand and confident enough to dream big.
As I walked away, her hand slipping out of mine, I carried more than just field notes that day. I carried a renewed belief. A belief that real change begins not in policies alone but in the quiet power of human connection. ❤
And that is why I continue this journey. Because beyond the numbers, it is these genuine, heartfelt moments that keep me grounded, inspired, and hopeful for a more inclusive future. 💚
