From Dust to Dance: A Day in Kutch We’ll Never Forget

After what felt like an endless train journey, we finally reached Bhuj, Gujarat, for our much-anticipated travel workshop. We were exhausted but absolutely buzzing with excitement. Meeting all the fellows after so long, sharing stories and preparing for days filled with exploration-there was something magical in the air.

We were staying at Khamir, a place so beautiful and peaceful that it instantly felt like home. From the moment we arrived, we were wrapped in the warmth of Dhanji Bhai and Geeta Ben, whose love and hospitality made us feel like family.

But today, I want to take you through January 30th—a day filled with dust, adventure, new learnings and of course, a little Garba!

Morning Madness: The Struggle is Real

The night before, we were briefed about our itinerary—where we were going, when we had to leave and even the temperature forecast (“Beware, it’s going to be HOT”).

For most of us, waking up was already a challenge, but three unfortunate souls—Isani, Nutan and Valli – had to wake up even earlier for a video shoot. While others were still trying to figure out which shoe belonged to whom, they had already bathed, dressed and rushed out, looking like warriors heading to battle.

Eventually, the rest of us managed to board the bus, but not without some classic chaos—someone was missing, someone forgot their water bottle, someone ran back for sunglasses. Finally, with everyone on board, we left for Banni Grassland.

The Banni Chronicles: Trees, Talks and Too Many Question

The bus ride was a story in itself. Some were busy making reels, some knocked out into deep sleep, while others just talked non-stop. Somewhere in between, Rohan, Geeta Ben, Ankita Ben and Kabita Ben joined us, we had reached Banni.

And then reality hit us—THE SUN. It was blazing hot and the only thing saving us was the shade of a few trees.

This is where we were introduced to our unexpected villain: Ganda Babul. This invasive thorny tree had spread all over Banni, damaging the ecosystem. Geeta Ben patiently explained how local communities were working to control its growth and even repurpose it. We bombarded her with so many questions that she probably regretted giving us shade in the first place!

Buffaloes and Battles: Learning from the Banni Breeders

Next, we headed to Hodka village to meet the Banni Breeders Association.

Here, Isha bhai welcomed us with a presentation, sharing the unique story of Banni buffaloes—their resilience, their significance and the community’s fight for land rights. It was eye-opening to hear how the pastoralists were negotiating with the government for their rights while ensuring their traditions thrived.

Of course, no discussion can happen on an empty stomach, so by now, we were desperate for food. Thankfully, lunch was delicious and fulfilling, served in a picturesque restaurant. After stuffing ourselves, we relaxed for a while, clicked endless selfies and laughed at random jokes before setting off for our next adventure.

Off-Roading to Chhari Dhand: Dust, Birds and Madness!

And now, the real adventure began—a trip to Chhari Dhand Wetland Reserve.

But this wasn’t just any trip. We rode in open-top gypsies, with some of us literally sitting on the roof! It was wild—bumpy roads, strong winds and dust flying everywhere. Some were holding on for dear life, while others were having the time of their lives.

When we finally reached the wetland, it was like stepping into a dream. The golden sunlight reflected beautifully on the water, birds chirped in the distance and the air was filled with an almost magical silence.

But let’s talk about the real victims of this trip—the roof riders. By the time we reached, they were covered in a thick layer of dust. They looked like ghosts from a sandstorm—but instead of complaining, they were laughing.

Because honestly, who cares about dust when you’re living an experience like this?

Rasul Bhai shared fascinating insights about the wetland’s birds and biodiversity, making us feel like we were part of a National Geographic documentary. We sipped on some warm chai, took in the scenery and just let ourselves be lost in the moment.

The Grand Finale: Garba, Because Why Not?

As the sun set, we made our way back to the restaurant, exhausted but still high on adrenaline.

But wait—something was missing.

We were in Gujarat. We had the energy. We had music. So, obviously, we HAD to dance.

And just like that, a full-blown Garba session began! With Kutchi folk songs playing, we danced our hearts out, forgetting about the dust, the tiredness and everything else. It was pure joy—messy, imperfect and absolutely unforgettable.

Goodnight at Khamir!

Finally, we hopped back on the bus, thanked Geeta Ben, Ankita Ben and Kabita Ben for being such amazing guides, and returned to Khamir.

After a long, crazy, adventure-filled day, we had one last meal together before crashing into our beds, already dreaming about what the next day had in store.

Some days are just more special than others. And this? This was one of those days.
