World Environment Day, traditionally celebrated on June 5th, took on a special significance in our rural landscape this year. Due to extended school holidays caused by scorching heat and increased humidity, the celebration was delayed. However, once the schools reopened, the event became a much-anticipated and exciting occasion for the students.
Organizing an event of this magnitude requires meticulous planning and a keen understanding of the audience. The goal was to create a series of engaging and educational activities for the young children in our project village. We decided to focus on the United Nations’ theme for Environment Day 2024: land restoration, halting desertification, and building drought resilience. To align with our project theme, we emphasized water resilience and land restoration.
The event began with a workshop on water resilience and land restoration. The children learned about the importance of conserving water and rehabilitating degraded lands. This was followed by a nature scavenger hunt, where students explored the campus to collect items from a list. The day concluded with an art and crafts session, where students created projects on themes of biodiversity, climate change, and conservation. They also learned to differentiate between native and non-native trees, culminating in a native tree planting drive where three native trees were planted on the school premises.
The enthusiasm and creativity of the young participants were truly inspiring. They approached each activity with passion and originality, showcasing their confidence and unique ideas.
While Odisha is often perceived as a backward state, cities like Bhubaneswar (the capital), Rourkela, Talcher, and others are developing rapidly. The rural areas possess equal potential. Events like these provide young minds with a platform to express their ideas and understand the global environmental challenges.
I am grateful to have made a small impact, which I hope will grow larger in the coming years. The experience reaffirmed my belief in the potential of our rural youth and the importance of nurturing their awareness and passion for the environment.

Empowering young minds to protect and restore our environment is the key to a sustainable future. Together, we can cultivate resilience and inspire change, one community at a time.
