Hello everyone! I am Ronid, JSW Foundation Fellow. Today, I’m excited to share with you the inspiring story of Raju Gurwal and his wife Sabitri ji, who faced hard times but found new paths to success. Their story is a beacon of hope, showing how communities can come together to overcome challenges.
In the village of Sripura, located in Jharsuguda District, Odisha, Raju Gurwal encountered tough times. He used to work at L.N Metallic until an accident led to him losing his right arm. The company supported him with a salary until 2011, but when it stopped, Raju didn’t lose hope. Despite setbacks, he worked hard in the paddy fields to provide for his family.
A New Beginning with Poultry Farming: In 2015, Raju decided to try something new- poultry farming. It was a brave move, filled with challenges, but for seven years, it became a source of strength for his family. In 0202, he married Sabitri, who later joined the Urvashi Self Help Group (SHG).
Community Support and a Turning Point: In 2023, Raju with support from wife, along with the SHG, discussed their needs and decided to acquire a machine for making puffed rice. This machine provided by the JSW BPSL CSR team and implemented by Access Development Services (ADS), changed everything for them. Together, they make 20 kg to 43 kg puffed rice every day and people from the village come to buy. It became a small business which helped their family to become self-sustained.
The strength of the Community and Support: Raju’s Story isn’t just about him; it’s about the strength of the rural community. He received support from his wife and the community, who became customers for their puffed rice business. Initiatives like those from the CSR team make a significant impact by recognizing people’s potential and giving them a chance.
In conclusion: Raju and Sabitri’s story is about more than overcoming problems. It’s about finding strength in hard times, trying new things and the importance of friends and neighbors helping each other out. Through simple words, I’ve shared a story of hope and community, where a man and his wife proved that with determination and support, even the toughest challenges can be turned into victories.
