‘It is interesting to me that the hobbies we had as kids usually also the things we love doing as adults’ when I read this thought in one of blogs on ‘The Stripe’ by Grace Atwood, I felt it very accurate. I found it true for me. So today I am going to write about my biggest hobby. i.e., cooking. Before talking about cooking let me tell you how I found this hobby. I don’t have many hobbies or any fancy hobby (I think I don’t have because I couldn’t)
Coming back to cooking, I love cooking since I was a kid. (Nowadays I felt bad for kids whom their parents don’t even allow to enter in kitchen) Every summer holiday I used to visit my Nani’s home. I was big foody (I am) so I was bit demanding and picky in food. My Nani was strict (now she is not strict with me at least) She told me “If you like to eat you should know how to cook” I was in fourth standard that time, still I felt very angry, went to my aunt and asked her “Mami (aunt) teach me how to cook.” That time they were using ‘Desi chulha’ (earthen stove) With safety precautions obviously for next 3-4 summers I learned to cook every typical dish cooking at my Nani’s home.
How do you people find your hobby? How to you manage to continue with your hobby? Mine is interesting way. Whenever I am angry, I cook. Whenever I am frustrated, I cook; I am tensed, I cook; I am happy I cook; I am sad I cook. (Sometimes I think muze aur kuch nhi aata) so basically, I never need separate time to pursue my hobby. I didn’t chose this hobby; this hobby has chosen me.
For education, for job I have been living in different places and having pleasure to tsate different varieties of food. Of course, I learned some the dishes. (no one can really judge the jayka in my food, whether its from Pune or from Kokan or from somewhere else) Currently I am located in Jaigad, Ratnagiri; Kokan region of Maharashtra. No one can beat the Ganeshotsav in Kokan. Ganpati Bappa love Ukdiche Modak. Every person here knows how to make modak or how to eat modak!
My cooking kida was so desperate to learn these Ukdiche modak. So, I decided to master this technique to cook authentic kokan’s ukdiche modak. Throughout the years I found that some techniques you can not acquire with YouTube videos, you need a trainer and proper demonstration and practice to acquire and master it. Fortunately, my Neighbour was a expert in making modak. She was making modak since her childhood. She agreed to teach me and she did! I might not able to make perfect modak after few attempts in last two moths but I am satisfied with my progress. ( I am not gonna share recipe here, you can dm me) I could serve those modak to Bappa!!! When I’ll visit my home next time, I’m gonna surprise my mother with these modak and I’ll ask for a reward. (My mom only makes fried momos) Of course I’ll serve them to my Nani also.
Next dish I am going to learn is Solkadhi. I’ll keep you posted. Anyway, I’d love to hear your ‘hobby’ stories and how you found them in the comments or you can just recommend me some dishes I should try.
